Magnificence in Meribel

Chalet Lady Mijane is quite magnificent. With 400sqm of well laid-out space over four floors, there is generous accommodation for up to twelve guests, especially in the context of a self-catering chalet. It is to be found in a quiet spot in Méribel village, justifiably claimed to be the prettiest part of this world-famous ski destination. It has an alpine feel with contemporary style. It is well-connected, especially for skiing, just minutes away from the Le Golf chairlift that transports skiers with all sorts of ambitions up to the Altiport area. Here, there is delightful skiing for children and the less confident and excellent connections into the vastness of the Trois Vallées for those whose skills and aspirations take them further. In the case of the Trois Vallées, that can be a lot further. The run down to the village is the beguiling blue Le Lapin; après ski at le Lodge can call without demanding that you stray much off your path home.

The Chalet has further magnificence. Its heart is the high-ceilinged open-plan space of the living room. We said that the style combined contemporary and old alpine - here you will see what we mean. There is, it must be said, a lot of lovely mellow timber. But – a question. What is the ubiquitous old-style embellishment beloved by alpine tradition?  Little hearts! Repeatedly carved into decorative woodwork! We used to see them everywhere but now they are diminishing as sleek modernity takes over chalet interiors. At Chalet Lady Mijane, in spite of light-filled space, confidently cool grey sofas, stylish lighting and designer dining chairs, we get hearts. Gracing the façade of the alpine chalet that occupies part of the living room. In fact, it is a cleverly attractive mezzanine housing another cosy sitting-room space. Amazingly, Chalet Lady Mijane pulls off this quirk of interior design with aplomb. It works. The living space comes complete with the huge central fireplace the other side of which there is a TV room, a sophisticated dining table, a well-equipped open kitchen, and a separate small office. It opens onto a large wooden terrace.

Of the five double bedrooms, three can be made up as twins and have shower rooms. The other two have bathtubs and include a spacious master bedroom. A children’s bedroom has bunkbeds and a separate bathroom with a bath. The children have another retreat to which to escape from the adults with their own enchanting TV/play room under the eaves.

The other retreat zone is the rather magnificent spa area. Unlike other spas with their abundance of marble or slate and shiny chrome, the ambiance here is softer. It is truly a place to unwind. Before nightfall, it is suffused with that delicate white glow of daylight in the mountains. It has its sauna, its hammam, its jacuzzi and even its fitness room, while holding out a clear invitation to come and sprawl, a little decadently, on large cushions.
