A white polar stands brooding by the pool. You know you are in an exceptional sort of chalet.
Now, we hesitate to use the word “exceptional” when talking about the chalets in our portfolio. So many are spectacular that the word “exceptional” becomes redundant. But we shall make an exception (sorry!). Chalet Freya is exceptional. How?
The location isn’t some high-end, bustling mega-resort. Argentière has a magnetic pull for serious skiers and for those who want something more pared back, more essentially alpine, than glitz. Sparkling new and yet traditionally built, the chalet occupies a tranquil position on its own large plot adjoining the forest. It face south and the view to the Mont Blanc Massif is unobstructed. That sense of magnificence, of awe, incited by high peaks and the drama of their stories, is unimpeded. From the door of the chalet, it is a short walk to a local beginners’ run and cross-country (ski de fond) trail and ten minutes (on foot) to access the Grand Montets ski lift.
So, Chalet Freya lives and breathes its mountain environment. But it is also luxurious. It is enthusiastically contemporary and artfully sophisticated. The brushed timber cladding, the polished glass and steel staircase and the pleasingly designed pieces of furniture, create an ambiance that has understated confidence and elegant poise. At the same time, the architecture inside and out maintains the connection with the environment, the white alpine light enters, the forest is close, the summits dominate.
The main living space on the first floor lavishly spreads out all open plan warmed by a striking modern wood burner with a semi-partitioned reading corner. The kitchen, Italian matte black and wood merging smartly with the rest of the space, adjoins the dining area, with its large table and plush chairs that know their destiny – delightfully fine dining that will replenish the weariest mountain adventurers, exquisitely served. A separate TV/movie room is another of those features that comes on the luxury chalet menu, and here it is a bright sitting room rather than a dark cavern.
Upstairs, under high-ceilinged eaves, there is a large master suite and a twin bedroom, each with its own bathroom, space for a family to claim some privacy if they so wish. On the ground floor, three further double bedrooms each have an ensuite shower room, lots of space for wardrobes and desks, and access into the garden. Down here is also where you find the spa, home to that polar bear who has lost its way. It is too warm and humid for ice in this steamy environment, but he looks happy enough to watch you visit to enjoy a post-ski day frolic in the water or relax in the heat. The pool is 10m long pool with a current feature to provide for a proper swim. The adjacent sauna is glamorously made of glass.
Chalet Freya demonstrates that luxury can be found beyond the flashier resorts. A great find, when access to what is, arguably, some of Europe’s best off piste, is on your doorstep. And the local village has retained a traditional charm lacking from so many others. All in all, pretty exceptional.

Do you love food? I don't know many people that don't - there is something wonderfully comforting and indulgent about having somebody else take control of the kitchen. But when that person is a talented chef with hands-on experience of high end restaurants, you know you’re in for a mouth-watering treat. We hand-pick our chalet partners for their beautiful properties, stand out service and their dedication to gastronomy. Here’s a taste of what you can expect when staying in one of our catered ski chalets:
No need to rush out of bed - breakfast is laid on. A healthy array of fresh fruit juices, a selection of warming teas and coffee - yoghurts, crispy cereals, juicy fruit and a mouth-watering display of delicious fresh breads & delicate pastries. Your chef will also prepare a daily cooked hot option for you - how do you like your eggs? On the chef's day-off you will be served a continental breakfast of wonderful French bread and pastries. So much choice that you might miss the first ski lift if you're not careful.
Come back after a wonderful day on the mountain to the warmth and comfort of your chalet to find afternoon tea laid out ready for you. Snuggle up on the comfy sofa in front of a crackling fire, with a steaming cup of tea and a generous serving of cake – this is how all afternoons should be. Your chef will prepare a fresh from the oven, sweet treat for your return, so whether your preference is for a hearty sticky Apple and Ginger cake or a delicate Mille-feuille aux framboise is more your thing, there will be something tempting waiting for you. Personally I don’t think you can beat a slice of crispy baguette with lashings of butter and dollops of apricot jam or nutella - but maybe that ‘s just me - the perfect comfort food.
Take a seat at your own private table - it's time for the main event – a delicious feast, masterfully crafted by your talented chef. With an emphasis on using hand-selected, fresh, local and seasonal ingredients you will be served a melt in your mouth three course dinner that wouldn't look out of place in a Michelin starred restaurant. Dinner is complimented by a tangy platter of divine local cheeses. You will enjoy carefully selected house wines with dinner which the chef has paired to his dishes although you can choose to upgrade the wines from the chalet's a la carte list. Menus can be tailored to suit your tastes and your chef will be happy to prepare everything from a simple supper to fine dining delights. Dinner is served on six nights, leaving you one night free to enjoy the local restaurants.
The chalet provides a stocked bar with a range of spirits, beer and soft drinks. Champagne is served with canapés on your arrival night.
The chalet is happy to cater for specific dietary requirements, and will serve an earlier high tea for children. You can talk to your SkiBoutique PA about any specific requests from dietary requirements such as gluten free diets to birthday cakes and favourite dishes. We will do our very best to ensure that your wishes are granted and delivered in resort.
