You’re a natural born leader. Always the first to try out a new style; hair cut, fashion - ski chalet. So the Backstage Loft is a breath of fresh air. Gone are the days of the square, Swiss chocolate box chalet, small windows, stained wood interior. They had their charm, sure, but you’re seeking cutting edge modern design, and as you draw up outside the magnificent exterior with its intricate panelling casting dramatic shadows you know you’ve found it at the Backstage Loft for sure.
This is the latest creation of legendary Zermatt designer Heinz Julen, who is never afraid to push the envelope and pioneer new ideas. Here he was challenged by a 700-year-old wooden Stubli on the site; criminal to tear it down, but what to do? Build it into the chalet of course. So it was raised upon stilts to the second floor, where it now sits proudly gazing out over the river Vispa as the most unique bedroom you are ever likely to find in the Alps. Yours, naturally – you found the chalet after all.
No-one else need feel to left out though as this whole property is unique and special from top to bottom. In one bedroom a wall of glass sits before the bed promising jaw dropping views out across the mountainsides – the flat screen TV hangs in the middle of this glass wall so you needn’t miss a single second of the sky line as it changes colour, even if you are catching your favourite show.
The Backstage Loft is an instantly iconic part of the Zermatt skyline, nestled into the shadows of her gatekeeper, the Matterhorn. The blend of the ancient Stubli with the modern industrial chic of the rest of the Loft is inspiring. An exposed metal flu sits against the polished concrete walls and pillars of the vast open plan dining room and kitchen. The extravagant dining table and suspended light fittings contrast appealingly with the exposed concrete walls, the impact of the double height ceiling is powerful and resembles a converted warehouse, fun and playful.
Technology is all around you, from the lights which retract into the ceiling when you choose to lose the dining table for a party one night, to the magic button opening the glass wall next to your large jet pool, bringing the out-doors indoors for a unique ambiance. The whirl pool is lit an electric blue and will simultaneously ease your aching ski legs and create a party atmosphere, music streaming from the state of the art sound system, glass of chilled champagne constantly topped up by the attentive staff team. Wow.
For quieter moments the cosy sitting room is waiting with luxurious fur throws to snuggle under on the Heinz Julen designed sofas. A softer side to the chalet here, with antique cabinets sitting comfortably inside the contemporary shell. A well equipped gym and sauna are here to be used at your leisure, and more leisurely still is the Cinema and games room. Sit back and catch a flick, chef can bring you some popcorn.
Your chef is as spectacular as the Loft itself, whipping up imaginative canapés and serving decadent dinners. On his night off you are treated like Zermatt royalty with the centre table at Heinz Julen’s Michelin starred ‘After 7’ restaurant, reserved with your name on it. A table in the VIP section of his glamorous Vernissage nightclub, too; if you have the staying power. If you’re flagging, though, not to worry. The Loft is just a 5 minute stroll from the centre of town so you have total freedom and independence to explore the iconic ski town at your leisure.
With such an incredible property you may well struggle to find the time to ski – but with views of the iconic mountains all around you from the extravagantly sized windows you are reminded that this was the purpose of your holiday… wasn’t it?

"Hero & Leander couldn’t be more in love with The Backstage Loft if we tried. This may not be the typical ‘couples’ trip away but gather a group of like-minded couples and you will be sure to have a blast. Come back after a wonderful day on the mountain to the warmth and comfort of your chalet. Snuggle up on the comfy sofa in front of a crackling fire, with a steaming cup of tea and a generous serving of cake – this is how all afternoons should be. Your chef will prepare a fresh from the oven, sweet treat for your return, so whether your preference is for a hearty sticky Apple and Ginger cake or a delicate Mille-feuille aux framboise is more your thing, there will be something tempting waiting for you. Personally I don’t think you can beat a slice of crispy baguette with lashings of butter and dollops of apricot jam or nutella - but maybe that ‘s just me - the perfect comfort food.

Dinner is complimented by a tangy platter of divine local cheeses. Menus can be tailored to suit your tastes and your chef will be happy to prepare everything from a simple supper to fine dining delights.
