It’s a penthouse because it is under eaves but not the eaves under which you have to stoop. These are majestic eaves that soar skywards like a mountain peak. As a self-catering ski apartment for six guests and their two lucky children, Les Bosses is impressive.
It shows a masterful understanding of luxury, style and sophistication but wraps it all up in a way that is snuggly warm when all is cold outside. It is a master of the beauty of wood as displayed in the open-plan living area with its solid beams and the craftmanship of the kitchen cabinets. It commands hospitality. There is the capacious sofa, the substantial dining table and a stove that burns pellets (a cleanly ecological option over burning logs – very considerate to the magnificent carpentry).
The rest of the accommodation continues the vibe that is modern with characterful quirks - the clever use of high ceilings and their supporting beams, contemporary lighting and balconies to show off the mountain panorama. We are intrigued by the gorgeous free-standing bath tub with its view over the living are that will be enjoyed by occupants of the master bedroom. They also have a separate shower room and a dressing area as well as their own balcony. Another double bedroom on this floor shares a shower room with the children’s twin bedroom above where beds nestle under the sloping roof. The third double is on the same floor as the living area. It has an ensuite shower room and a private balcony.
You will find Les Bosses in the Le Crêt area of Val d’Isère. Once a traditional hamlet where old farmhouses have been renovated to create a privileged enclave, the buildings now seem to agree to fit prettily into their environment. There are lovely views over the resort. It is peaceful and quiet but a short bus or car ride (around a 13 minute walk) to the liveliness of down town Val d’Isère. For skiing, you can head to Rond Point (the bus is a good option) for the Solaise or Bellevarde side of the mountain or get even more quickly to La Daille for the whole Espace Killy ski area.
And you are skiing (and boarding) Val d’Isère. Most likely you love your mountains and know that Les Bosses refers to moguls, those wonderfully testing features of the slope. Whether you love them or hate them, it is fair to say that Penthouse Les Bosses is the Boss of the Bosses (some of you might remember that epic inter-resort mogul bashing contest whose origins go back to a late night debate in a bar in Val……)
