Lofty Luxury

Some high-end chalets foresake their feeling for place and environment in the pursuit of elegance, glamour or state-of-the-art facilities. Not so Markhor! Despite its divinely appointed rooms and its luxury, you never forget that you are in an alpine chalet. Mature timber throughout, even in the wellness areas, communicates a sense of mountain charm and warmth. Chalet Markhor is a masterpiece.

A fabulous fusion of tradition and indulgence. It is also at the foot of a ski piste and cosily close to the lift stations in one of the word’s most prestigious ski resorts. Not only that, but a prestigious ski resort that caters for beginner skiers as well as the passionate afficionadoes by whom it is revered.

Even though it has all the anticipated features of a privileged chalet – comfortable en-suite bedrooms, vast living space, sumptuous dining area, cinema, bar and games room – Chalet Markhor is well aware that it belongs in the mountains. Decorative details, textiles and colours are in harmony. The spa area is a work of art, blending the post ski day hedonism of an indoor swimming pool, Hammam and sauna, with chalet style architecture. Even the work-out equipment is in stylish synergy with the elegantly faux-rustic surroundings.

Under lofty ceilings at the top of the chalet, the open plan living space has unpretentious grandeur and a wood-burning fireplace. Other floors are all connected by an in-house lift ending up on the lower floors with the spa and underground car park with space for three cars. There is a master bedroom suite with its dressing room, ethanol fireplace, and magnificent bath tub. Four other double bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms and there is a children’s bunkbed room where two younger members of the party will find a space to delight their imaginations. They also get their own en-suite. We like the sense of fun in the attention to detail: the popcorn machine in the cinema room, the slightly decadent hint of the bar area next to the gym, and lovely wooden balconies proper chalet style.

As befits a luxurious chalet of this calibre, there is the champagne reception and the friendly yet assiduous service you would expect. You have your private chef, housekeeper and butler to serve at table. Food and bevarages are charged separately so that menus and liquid refreshments can be planned in advance in order to meet the most sophisticated of tastes. Or less sophisticated and more hearty. Or whatever combination. The choice is yours.

It is quite remarkable, in our eyes, to find a high-end chalet with such a compelling profile in such a location. Close to the centre of an iconic European ski town, with ski lifts and even fun for beginner skiers (conditions permitting) almost a snowball’s throw away.
