White Horses in Snow

Le Cheval Blanc is a stunning chalet for fourteen guests in a privileged position in Le Raffort. Among the villages of the Méribel valley the hamlet of Le Raffort is among the most picturesque.

Furthermore, it is served by the Olympe gondola, a smooth, efficient and comfortable ride to La Chaudanne and all the connections for the Trois Vallées. The station is right opposite the chalet (a mere 80m). The Raffort piste, a winding blue/green delight that passes through forests and is known for good visibility even in poor weather, that deposits skiers just 20m from the chalet’s ski room with its boot warmers at the ready. There is also a driver service to transport you to lift stations around the Méribel valley between 8am and 8pm each day making leaving the car at home a strong temptation, although there is parking in the garage for three cars if needs be.

A scattering of lovely chalets takes advantage of this location. Whether new builds or renovated farm buildings, they have maintained the prettily rustic ambiance while offering beautiful accommodation with enchanting views to La Saulire the mountain that watches over this spell-binding alpine landscape. But Cheval Blanc must be among the most impressive.

Outside, Le Cheval Blanc blends with its surroundings. Then, inside, it makes its statement. Not because it is bold, glitzy or brash. On the contrary. It simply uses the feel of the mountains, adds beautiful design, and creates a haven. It turns weathered timber into solid beams and lovely doors, ancient posts and pillars, like a world gone by. It uses rough-hewn stonework like a historic barn with a preservation order firmly in place and then sets it off with sophisticated furnishings and luxurious fabrics.

A beautiful stone staircase (there is also a lift) leads from a gracefully rustic hallway to 450m2 of richly designed space for a large, discerning, party. As well as the open plan living and dining area, there are other spaces for reading or gazing at the view and a richly decadent cinema room. The seven individually designed double bedrooms have en-suite facilities with a shower or bath. A curvaceous indoor swimming pool is a dreamy option for end of ski day relaxation.

Guests at Le Cheval Blanc will be looked after by a personal chef and a chalet host, cooking and serving breakfast, afternoon tea and a three-course dinner (with the pre-dinner drinks and canapés around the fire of course) on five days of the week. The other two mornings there will be continental breakfast – often a good option if a generous lunch is planned.

This is a chalet that will stay carved in the ski holiday memory bank. Is it the stylish combination of rustic heritage with a sense of grandeur that is still cosy, comfortable? Or is it the proximity to an efficient lift into an awe-inspiring ski area? Well, that depends on you.
