As Unique As A Snowflake

Snowflake is a sophisticated contemporary apartment, part of the Kempinski Residences in St Moritz Bad. The Residences are connected to the prestigious Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski and are designed and finished to match the dignity of this palatial hotel that opened in 1864. It was one of the first grand hotels of an era when European aristocracy started to flock from smoggy cities to the Alps to experience the beauty of the mountains and their crystal-clear health-giving air. The ambiance lives on in the town’s old streets, its fine restaurants and its hallowed traditions. Maybe one day you will ride the Cresta! Or maybe you’re already a veteran of the most famous toboggan run in the world.

Apartment Snowflake occupies the third floor of the Residences, a graceful building that is architecturally coherent with the original hotel. In many ways, it is two apartments in one, ensuring that all eight guests can find privacy and peace in spacious accommodation. There are two reception halls and two large living rooms, each with a small open kitchen to one side. Both living rooms breathe understated opulence, with artfully arranged classical furniture and decorated in a soft palette of gentle browns and neutrals. In one of these salons, a solid wood dining table comfortably seats eight. In the other a smaller round dining table for has seating for four. This leaves space for an item of furniture that is unusual in a ski resort but is, somehow, sublimely St Moritz. A billiard table.

All four double bedrooms are suitably generous, with space for dainty writing desks and plenty of storage. They have dressing rooms and genteel bathrooms that provide double basins, proper bathtubs and separate showers. Throughout the property, French windows open onto balconies and views to the surrounding mountains many of which tower above 3,000m.

The Residences enjoy a private lounge, a very civilised space for refined socialising, and there is access to the facilities of the historic hotel, with its lavish spa and pool and exquisite dining – one of the three restaurants has been awarded two Michelin stars. St Moritz knows glamour, it knows style, and it is home to an inspiring collection of events and activities. But it also knows about some excellent skiing, with over 350km of pistes and an excellent snow record. The Residences are well-placed. Next to the Kempinski, the Signal Bahn ski lift gives access to the Corviglia area and the last run down from the Corvatsch area makes the Residences ski-in from this side too.

Visitors to St Moritz will have a clear idea of where they are going – one of the most exclusive resorts in the Alps that has a rarefied culture and a lifestyle unto itself. If you too are bewitched by its charm, the Kempinski Residence is somewhere you might just plan to stay a little longer.
