This is a chalet that just wants you to take life that little bit less seriously. Who cares if your laptop crashed when the end of year review was being written. Who cares if the builders haven’t turned up for two weeks. After arriving into Tignes les Brévières’ Chalet Babylon, your wife will be startled by the new you. Shoes thrown off, with neat coordinated lines being a thing of yesterday, you strut into the lift and up to the open plan living area of the third floor.
There is something about Chalet Babylon that just makes you leave all cares in the world outside. Your colleagues won’t recognize this new reformed you next week. For now though, it is time to take your champagne flute for a jaunt to the windows where the marvellous views of the Isère Lake have you mesmerized. No matter how transformative the mountains are, pacing will always be your thing. It’s a habit, you can’t help it.
However, tomorrow you get to swap pacing the windows, whether that be your London office or luxury chalet, for your favourite pastime of them all. The pistes of Tignes. Unpacking is normally relished with military precision but hey, that can wait until tomorrow. Somehow sitting in the communal hot tub with beers and the soft flurry of snow falling around you sounds a lot more appealing. After all, there is no point wasting a second of the seven days of precious wind down. You have a lot to look forward to.
Ski holidays are made for just that. Skiing. Particularly if it continues snowing like it is predicted to overnight. You are feeling rather smug that Chalet Babylon has direct access to the village gondola that takes you directly to the ski station in Tignes Les Brévières. This snowy landscape is all yours and with fresh powder a precious commodity, lunch at La Fruitiere can wait. You know that this afternoon, the bittersweet of that burning fire in your leg muscles combined with one last run back home will be rewarded with the sweet and savoury delights of afternoon tea. With such an inviting south facing living room, at least two cups of coffee are necessary before even contemplating moving from where your weary limbs landed.
After one more goats cheese tartlet, the wellness room with hydro massage bed has your name on it. After that, whilst the children are having their earlier supper, you plan on sinking into your ensuite’s unique stone bath. Over a G&T you’ll ponder how on earth they got such striking sculptures into Chalet Babylon. However, after musing this problem longer than your ice cubes stay frozen, you conclude that this can only be something designed by a skier. A professional rally-driving skier at that. Where there is a will there is a way. Particularly when you can sympathise with the day’s aches and pains.
It is for only a rare hour at most that calm falls upon any chalet that the Wilkinson clan descends upon. Before supper, the children are either collapsed into their bunkroom or expending their last bit of energy in the communal swimming pool. Nothing makes you happier than seeing them in their element.
It may be a little indulgent taking the entire chalet for your favourite week this year. However, next year you know that when you return with friends and family, all five bedrooms, resplendent in hues of plush grey and wooden tones, will be occupied. Living and anarchy will resume once more in equal measure.
These mountains just know how to make you feel alive. As do the team behind your perfect luxury chalet. For now, these are your most cherished days of the year for a reason.

No need to rush out of bed - breakfast is laid on. A healthy array of fresh fruit juices, a selection of warming teas and coffee - yoghurts, crispy cereals, juicy fruit and a mouth-watering display of delicious fresh breads & delicate pastries. Come back after a wonderful day on the mountain to the warmth and comfort of your chalet. Snuggle up on the comfy sofa in front of a crackling fire, with a steaming cup of tea and a generous serving of cake – this is how all afternoons should be. Your chef will prepare a fresh from the oven, sweet treat for your return, so whether your preference is for a hearty sticky Apple and Ginger cake or a delicate Mille-feuille aux framboise is more your thing, there will be something tempting waiting for you. Personally I don’t think you can beat a slice of crispy baguette with lashings of butter and dollops of apricot jam or nutella - but maybe that ‘s just me - the perfect comfort food.
