“Where are you skiing this year”? “Ste Foy? Never heard of it”. That’s because its one of the French Alps’ best kept secrets, and shhh. We’d like it to stay that way. You travel the familiar roads through the Tarentaise looking to all casual observers as though you are headed for Tignes, or Val d’Isère perhaps. Then an unexpected turn to the left away from the familiar route and up a smaller, steeper road, winding sharply up. You’re on the road less travelled, the road to the Tarentaise’s treasured off-piste mecca, the legendary Ste Foy.
A fork in the road leads you around a bend and under the piste, and as you emerge from the tunnel you see a shining golden chalet perched on the rim of the mountain: Yellowstone Ranch. Unlike any other property on this mountain, Yellowstone pre-dates the recent additions to resort by a good couple of decades and is timeless, an iconic feature of this special French resort. Recent refurbishments have ensured this magnificent chalet retains its place at the top of the tree and the interiors croon style and sophistication.
You chose the Lodge for a special family celebration, a chance to catch up and spend ‘proper’ time together, and Yellowstone provides the perfect setting. The Lodge itself is generous in proportion and facilities, but if you need more space you have the option of the addition of the adjoining Ranch which allows your extended family to really spread out. It’s about quality time, not being on top of each other.
Bursting with design features, a bright and bold colour palate and real personality, a stay here cannot be forgotten. The service from the resident staff members is both attentive and discreet. Oh so quietly they organise your ski equipment, produce your lift passes and gently guide you through the important decisions of your vacation. Do you want Champagne with your canapés this evening, or a Mojito? Massages: Swedish or deep tissue? One of the loveliest memories is of sitting back in the out door hot tub, fizz in hand, soaking in the extraordinary, uninterrupted views across the Tarentaise valley, you feel like you’re in your own little bubble and you never want it to burst.
The skiing surprises you. An off-piste mecca yes, this you had heard. A family paradise – sure, this is why you came. Just a handful of lifts and all runs leading to ‘home’. Literally in your case as Yellowstone sits on the edge of the nursery slopes. You had not thought that the relatively few pistes on offer would hold such interest for the more advanced skiers in the group, but there are long, swooping blues and reds. Wide and cruisey, and then steep blacks with itineraries packed with moguls. Best of all - no lift queue whatsoever.
Your chalet chauffeur seems superfluous to requirements given that you’re in such close proximity to all the resort amenities, but it is nice to be collected from La Coeur after a glass or two of wine at après. It is the other side of the nursery slopes after all. He can also be booked for a little day trip out to the neighbouring ski resorts should you wish - you’re within half an hour of some big hitters in Val D’Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs and La Rosière, if you fancy variety.
Evenings can be spent telling tales of the days thrills and spills around the roaring log fire, working out in the Kenesis techno gym if your legs weren’t pushed hard enough on the hill, or in the case of the kids; out of your way in the separate TV snug, giving you blissful peace and quiet. For now, at least.
Dinner is in your hands; sort of - you won’t have to cook it of course, your private chef will see to this. But you are free to influence his menu with personal preferences, or you can sit back, relax and look forward to being surprised daily. Either way you’re sure to enjoy the local flavours of the Savoyard region creatively presented, and without having to lift a finger in the preparation or clear up.
So when your friends ask “Where did you go on holiday?” you must decide; do you spill the beans and watch the envy spread across their faces. Or do you keep this treasure all to yourself?

"Sainte Foy is a very special resort and it has Yellowstone which is a very special chalet. We have stayed this last week with our two children, 14 and 16. It is a chalet that is owner managed. Great service in a luxurious and stunning chalet. Every aspect of your holiday is covered...delicious food, stunning rooms and amazing facilities."
"Yellowstone is an absolutely fantastic place, we stayed there for our honeymoon. It is set in an ideal location, minutes walk from the slopes, with a stunning vista. The Chalet has a modern décor unlike most others we’ve looked at, and yet has a very homely feel. The staff were impeccable and couldn’t do enough to help."
"I had the most amazing time when I stayed at Yellowstone. The chalet is amazing and so cosy with open fires and so much space. It is in a fantastic location, very close to the lifts, restaurants and ski hire. The food at the chalet was incredible, some of the most delicious food I have ever tasted."
