The kids have been on countdown all week; that’s packing count down for you it seems. As it gets to ‘one more sleep’ you feel the first buzz of excitement too, funny how that coincides with the last few bits getting zipped away, ready to fly out the following day. The next hours whizz by and you find yourself rounding the final bends in the road and reaching the centre of Méribel, snow covered lights twinkling from the rooftops. A few minutes later you reach the exclusive Route des Chalets, the Mayfair of Méribel, and pull up outside Chalet Bartavelles, your winter retreat.
Perched proudly on the edge of the Doron piste, and yet screened by snow-covered pines dotted around the private plot, Chalet Bartavelles is a grand old chalet. Constructed in the style typical of Méribel, with old stone and bright pine, she is vast in both size and stature.
The children are already racing around the chalet pinging snowballs at each other, taking advantage of the wrap-around grounds. You leave them to it and slip inside, the welcoming warmth of the chalet echoed by that of the hosts’ warm welcome, as they exchange your coats for glasses of chilled champagne and your eagerly anticipated holiday begins.
This is the first of many special memories in Chalet Bartavelles; as you cast your eyes around the cosy sitting room for the first time, enchanted by the traditional open log fire, flames a flickering. Through the windows on to the terrace you have unrivalled views out across Méribel; there’s a handy set of high-powered binoculars mounted on a tripod here, so you can check out the lift queues before deciding where to ski each morning.
The chalet is arranged over split levels and as you explore you discover hidden delights, such as the games room and pool table (an ongoing family tournament ensues here that outlasts the week), the cinema room perfect for chilled evenings in, and the library area complete with bridge table. Around another corner, tucked away is the sauna, which coupled with the outdoor hot tub on the lower terrace makes for some truly indulgent après ski.
Before the après though, first the ski, and you could not be better placed. The Doron piste is a sweeping Blue that leads directly into the resort centre at the Chaudanne lift station. Pop down to the ski room to assemble your kit and discover your boots toasty warm, prepared by your attentive chalet host, and as they help you into them your skis are gathered and laid out on the piste just metres from the door. Click into your bindings and your day’s skiing has begun. You drop the kids at ski school and head off to explore the 600km of pistes on your doorstep in Les Trois Vallées.
Though you can ski back to your door some days you might prefer to finish in town to sample the bars and the après ski bang in the centre. A spot of retail therapy too, perhaps, before calling on the services of your chauffeur to collect you and return you to Chalet Bartavelles. This magnificent chalet and her team of professional staff offers you total flexibility and freedom, and after all, isn’t that what holidays are all about?
The crowning glory of your stay here is the creative and delicious menu prepared by your own private chef. After a pre-holiday phone call they cleverly include many family favourites in the week’s repertoire, and most importantly do not impose black listed ingredients on you. Or the kids, who they happily feed a little earlier in the evening. Allowing the grown up’s some delicious adult time in the dining room each evening, to sit back, soak in the views and enjoy dining in a sophisticated ambiance, with very grown-up wines to match. Blissful.
