Be In The Know

Davos is one of those destinations that creates a debate. Enthusiastic advocates love the lively, cosmopolitan town, the beauty of the surrounding mountains and positively rave about the skiing. Then there are others who find that the town sprawls and who struggle with the lack of connection between the ski areas. We shall let you in on a secret – and that is the secret of Davos. You have to know it and understand it, then you discover just how good it can be. And Tivoli Lodge does that for you – in an instant, you will be in the know, a Davos afficionado.

Not only that. You will also experience chalet holiday bliss. Your wonderful group of friends and family, with all their different ski vacation must-haves, will find their hearts’ desires here, even if they are eight years old and their dream was inspired by the movie Frozen (more on that later).

Tivoli Lodge offers all the elements of the best chalet holiday then polishes them up and adds some imaginative extras. The result is a harmonious blend of luxury with a relaxed outlook. As you approach, you see a substantial, traditional building, old timber balconies facing the sun, views over mountains. Inside you find a congruence of elegantly classical design and the utmost comfort. From the moment you enter the spacious hallway with its gracious wooden staircase, as you appreciate the carefully curated artwork, the ambiance reminds you that the good things have an enduring quality. Dining around a vast table, all starched white cloths, polished glasses glow in the light of a magnificent chandelier. Logs are blazing in  the stone fireplace. As you dine, you will be treated by the skills of your Michelin trained chef and served by smiling professionals who delight in ensuring that you feel at home.

Each of the seven bedrooms is individually designed and provides all that you would expect from a hotel with stars bursting from its gables. But it is, perhaps, the youngest members of the party who will believe that a magic wand has waved and some of their wilder wishes were granted. Tivoli Lodge is an exquisitely sophisticated chalet, but it has not forgotten about the children. There is a room of bunk beds where six little ski enthusiasts can each snuggle in their own bed, draw their cosy curtains and play peaceful snow angels as they drift towards sleep. As if that wasn’t enough, just wait until they set eyes on the playroom. An abundance of fabulous playthings set within their very own ice-palace (an entrancing soft play areas) where they will never get bored and certainly not freeze.

However, if your little snow bunnies need to melt for a while, invite them to the spa. Or not, there might be times when the delights of the playroom gift the adults with a quiet time to soak in peace. The pool is crystal clear, large windows reflecting the snow on its limpid water. Then the adjacent jacuzzi starts to swirl, the dry heat of the sauna promises to heat you to the core even if you have been out in the high mountains all day. The steam bath, ultimate relaxation, beckons.

You’re going to need that sublime spa rejuvenation. Back to Davos. You can never be bored in Davos. It is a large town, almost a small city, but a city with the most glorious backdrop of mountains as well as excellent shopping. It is very much a mountain town, with good claim to be the birthplace of winter sports. There is sledging and ice-skating. There are well-marked walking trails. It’s tempting to forget about the skiing. Don’t! The skiing is one of the most enticing secrets of this classic resort.

From beginner to downhill racer, from wide open pistes to steep couloirs. A modernisation programme over recent years has bequeathed new lifts and 300km of prepared runs. It goes high, up to 2844m. There are treelined areas for bad weather and meadows for sunny spring skiing. It has inviting mountain restaurants and spectacular après ski parties. There are great options for boarders. And while mogul enthusiasts might not always find the knee burning exercise they seek, lovers of off piste are in for a treat.

The fabulous element at Tivoli Lodge is that these opportunities are all open to you. You will be let in on the secret, should you so wish. Your own ski guides or instructors come to the Lodge, ready to share with you an intricate knowledge of Davos skiing. You will the best of it, whatever your level. If you love the sensation of a well-groomed piste, you have someone to show you the routes that are the most efficient and the most fun, whatever the conditions. And also lead you to the best of the restaurants. Even those separated ski areas become part of the charm. There are connections, if you know how to find them, the weather is right, and your guide shows you the way. With two chauffeured vehicles at your disposal, the possible routes are exhaustive, and possibly exhausting.

Time to get back to Tivoli Lodge, your haven, your home. Soak in the pool, sip a cocktail, anticipate dinner. The children are lost in play. You are a Davos devotee.

Reviews

FROM THE PRESS

More boutique hotel than chic chalet, Tivoli is an Alpine heavyweight, and not just during the world economic Forum. With over 700sq/m of living space for 12 guests, it’s coolly capacious yet intensely discreet, despite being ski-in ski-out and only a two-minute chauffeured drive from the town centre.

Behind the traditional exterior and monastically rounded front door lies a grand, sweeping staircase and majestic drawing room with a two-tiered stone mantelpiece. Greyed-off wood panelling abounds and continues down the steps to the glamorous dining room. With playfully ornate low-slung chandelier, silver curtains and purple and silver Louis XIV chairs, it’s the ideal setting to enjoy Tivoli’s rather epic dinners and the Berry Bros curated wines.

The icing on the cake is the indoorpool and spa. Converted from an adjoining barn, you follow the labyrinth of corridors past the indoor cinema to find a 10m-long indoor pool, waterfall, jetstream, Jacuzzi and sauna, surrounded on two sides by glass overlooking the Engadine peaks. All you need now is a glass of Bollinger which, happily, comes on tap.

Annie -  SKIBOUTIQUE

Gastronome

Do you love food? I don't know many people that don't - there is something wonderfully comforting and indulgent about having somebody else take control of the kitchen. But when that person is a talented cook, you know you’re in for a mouth-watering treat. We hand-pick our chalet partners for their beautiful properties, stand out service and their dedication to gastronomy. Here’s a taste of what you can expect when staying in one of our catered ski chalets:

A perfect start to the day

Wake up to a delicious breakfast - a healthy array of fresh fruit juices, a selection of warming teas and coffee - yoghurts, crispy cereals, juicy fruit and a mouth-watering display of delicious fresh breads & delicate pastries. On 6 mornings your chalet cook will also prepare a daily cooked hot option for you - how do you like your eggs? So much choice that you might miss the first ski lift if you're not careful. Breakfast is served daily.

High tea temptations

Come back after a wonderful day on the mountain to the warmth and comfort of your chalet. Snuggle up on the comfy sofa in front of a crackling fire, with a steaming cup of tea and a generous serving of cake – this is how all afternoons should be. Your chef will prepare a fresh from the oven, sweet treat for your return, so whether your preference is for a hearty sticky Apple and Ginger cake or a delicate Mille-feuille aux framboise is more your thing, there will be something tempting waiting for you. Personally I don’t think you can beat a slice of crispy baguette with lashings of butter and dollops of apricot jam or nutella - but maybe that ‘s just me - the perfect comfort food.

Celebrate with Canapés

When staying in a catered chalet every night feels like a special occasion, and why shouldn't it, you're on an amazing holiday and it's so good to be alive. You’re dressed and ready for a glass of something chilled with friends and family, ready to regale them with tales of your mountain adventures that may get a little exaggerated for dramatic effect with each rendition. Enjoy the delicious canapés and amuse-bouche freshly prepared by your star in the kitchen.

Serving up a sensuous feast

Take a seat at your own private table - it's time for the main event – a delicious feast, masterfully crafted by your talented chef. With an emphasis on using hand-selected, fresh, local and seasonal ingredients you will be served a melt in your mouth three course dinner that is complimented by a tangy platter of divine local cheeses. Menus can be tailored to suit your tastes and your dinner is accompanied by carefully paired wines and is served on six nights of your stay.

Let the good times flow

The chalet serves Champagned and canapes before dinne and  house wines with the meal. There is an open bar with beer, spirits and soft drinks.

Children & dietary requirements

The chalet is happy to cater for specific dietary requirements, and will serve an earlier high tea for children. You can talk to your SkiBoutique PA about any specific requests from dietary requirements such as gluten free diets to birthday cakes and favourite dishes. We will do our very best to ensure that your wishes are granted and delivered in resort.
