You’re sitting back in the gold, sparkling whirlpool, music softly playing, jets gently massaging away the wear and tear of the last few month’s hard graft. Pressing the magic button, the glass roof above you begins to open and you raise your glass of champagne as the whirlpool begins its ascent, up, up and away through the open ceiling and out into Zermatt's moonlit sky. You’re no rock star, but shhh don’t tell anyone, this week you feel like one.
Glamorous and completely unique, The Backstage Chalet will knock you for six; rock star or not. The bonkers creation of legendary Zermatt artist and designer Heinz Julen, his imagination knows no bounds. This striking, angular conception is based on an old Valais house with an ultra modern extension above made entirely of local larch and glass giving 360-degree views over Zermatt village, and her constant guardian the Matterhorn.
Slap bang in the centre of Zermatt you can explore the boutiques and bars of the iconic Swiss town at your leisure, and you’re just a snowball’s throw away from the Klein Matterhorn ski lift so you waste no time at all in hitting the slopes. The Backstage Hotel – big sister to your private chalet, is just a few minutes stroll away and as a valued guest you have access to all the hotel’s facilities – including their quirky, themed spa, and the designer cinema.
You really are spoiled by the facilities in your own chalet though – which also has its own dark, moody cinema on the ground floor, and a play area to keep children amused. You will find a sauna here too, so really do you ever need to leave? The internal lift ensures you need exert no more energy than you wish here, this echoed as you are expertly looked after by the team of staff. Even the bedrooms radiate old-school style and glamour, with hand-crafted wooden beds and over-sized headboards, the bathrooms sleek, pearlescent tiles adding a touch of sparkle.
Each day can begin with steaming mugs of tea and coffee in bed, before a decadent breakfast to set you up for a big day of skiing. Your own private ski guide can be arranged to greet you at the chalet and help you with your top-of-the-range ski gear – got to look the part. Speaking of looking every inch the rock star; take a scenic helicopter flight around the Matterhorn and the neighbouring high peaks; then stop off in Italy for a spot of lunch at Chalet Etoile. Very Mick Jagger.
The cuisine is exemplary in the traditional mountain restaurants, and every bit as good back at your swanky ski pad. Your private chef is highly talented and passionate about his craft. Each evening the culinary journey begins with canapés and champagne before the log burner, which gives a warming glow to the open-plan loft-style lounge. You are surrounded by glass on all sides making the most of your roof top views over the town, and up towards the iconic Matterhorn. The furniture is all Heinz Julen designed too of course; modern leather and cowhide sofas for you to recline on to soak up the views and the ever-changing night skies.
You might be sad to hear that chef does get one night off during the week; until you learn that the centre table at Heinz Julen’s ‘After 7’ Michelin starred restaurant is all yours – you have to keep up that rock star image after all. To that end, book a massage therapist or two to come and bestow indulgent treatments on your guests in the comfort of the chalet. Your chalet manager will see that you are looked after by the best. This is a master class in vacationing in style, and you’ve pulled it off with aplomb.

“Heinz Julen’s Backstage Chalet makes a striking architectural statement with its larch wood features, dramatic glass walls, and unique design innovations. Exclusively decorated with furnishings manufactured by Julen himself, the property boasts a spectacular living, dining and kitchen space above which lies a state-of-the-art pool. When the weather permits, the retractable roof can be open, letting the pool lift above. A private home cinema along with games room, sauna, and children’s playroom complement the outstanding facilities of this luxurious chalet with majestic views of Zermatt and the stately Matterhorn”
“This accommodation is a one-off, much like its designer and owner Heinz Julen, an architect, artist, sculptor and all round creative genius. Who on earth would ever have thought of a hot tub that rises up through the ceiling, into the night sky, above the rooftops of Zermatt? only Heinz. That feature is worth the admission price alone. The rest of the chalet is populated with artefacts and interesting objects fashioned by his own hands. A stay in the Backstage is more than a vacation, it’s an event.”
