Never has a flat above a shop had the glamour, indulgence, the sheer luxury, of Chalet la Datcha. And there is one massive advantage of a flat above a shop – you are right in the centre of town. An unusual attribute of a sumptuous ski chalet that not only sleeps ten guests in comfort and style, but that also tempts them into the soothing heat of a salubrious spa after a day on the mountain.

And manages to do this in Verbier. Yes, Verbier, the world-famous Verbier where a wide sunny bowl and a vast ski area have resulted in an abundance of gorgeous chalets that creep across the foothills, many at a serious distance from the hub. Not so at la Datcha. An amble down the road, after, perchance, a whisper of an après ski, and you’re at the door to your palace. Don’t be misled by assumptions. This rather special chalet offers some privileged features for what poses as a flat above a shop. Its interiors are luscious, its finish immaculate and its facilities seductive. That spa is a very good reason to escape le Farinet in good time.

So, let’s start in the basement, or the lower ground floor. This is where you find the sauna, hammam and jacuzzi, all exotically styled and set off with gorgeous mood lighting. Up one, the ground floor, has the ski and boot room and one of the numerous (five in all) bedrooms with its ensuite shower room and terrace. The living area is next, a bright, open plan space, with gently stated but confidently stylish designer furniture, lighting and fabrics. It is a sociable space with windows out onto a large terrace, rather a fun place to watch the world go past as afternoon turns to evening and skiers are stumbling home. Another ensuite bedroom on this floor at the rear of the house has access to two balconies.

Up to the top floor and two more double bedrooms with balcony access, both with ensuites one of which has a bathtub. Then there is the fabulous master bedroom suite. Now, all the bedrooms are delightful. They enjoy the cosiness of the weathered timber that clad much of the chalet’s interior and are bright with the light from large French doors. Beds are delectably comfortable; the linen is fine quality and the colours are pleasing. But the master is special. Taking up the breadth of the house, the bedroom is huge with a seating area and a rather magnificent stone fireplace. There is a dressing-room and large bathroom with jacuzzi bath and separate walk-in shower. If it is not obvious for whom the master is destined according to the composition of your party, we suggest a robustly fair session of drawing lots.

The kitchen area in the open plan living space is spacious and excellently equipped. Perhaps you will be cooking up a storm and coming together for long evenings around the rather sophisticated dining table with its comfortable seating and nearby wine fridge on hand to keep everything flowing. But then, Verbier’s vibrant dining scene is close at hand, that rather high-class shop just below you is well-positioned. At la Datcha, the choice between cosy evenings at home, exploring the town, or a combination of the two is, entirely, yours.
