It’s that time of year when you have just returned from your favourite hedonistic week of the year and the inevitable mountain blues have hit with vengeance. Don’t tell your husband but you might have just made a spontaneous call to your friends in high places to start banishing such feelings. They have just let you into a little secret, found in your favourite Les Trois Vallées.
You proudly declare the words Chalet Coco to the eagerly awaiting dining table. You wait for the concerned squeals from your mother-in-law about staying in an old barn and the joy from your daughter that said barn has undergone the ultimate of transformations. You have learnt that trying to win Granny over is futile. However, any hint of enthusiasm from your teenage children is rare, let alone such enthuse for a chalet that you plan on staying in in eleven months’ time. It seems that this no-expense spared, metamorphosis from barn to luxury private chalet has your name all over it. It is hard to contain your inner joy.
With nerves a little shredded after packing everything but the kitchen sink into an array of ski bags, St Martin de Belleville is calling. Your only saving grace is knowing that upon arrival you will be greeted by diligent staff and sumptuous luxury. There is something about the talented combination of original features hinting at Chalet Coco’s past, alongside modern tones and decadent fabrics that manages to bring an air of calm back into your day.
You have wound your way up from Moûtiers and finally turn the bend to Villarabout. Chalet Coco is waiting for you with open beams and a roaring fire. You and the chalet staff both know that the peace will be shattered as soon as your teenagers charge offer to secure their favourite rooms. Their lair for the week, where amongst ski socks and electrics, they will undoubtedly hibernate for the week. At this point you can usually feel the tension rising but we did promise you that this would be an arrival day like no other. One of tranquillity and one where tension is left outside in the January cold.
With not one but two master suites, Chalet Coco knows how to appease Granny’s withering looks. The first master suite is located downstairs on the ground floor, enjoying an enviable double aspect from the French doors and terrace beyond. The staff sensed that this was your perfect bolthole where the toils of daily life can be forgotten and time for just you indulged in. Take that neglected book out onto the terrace in the afternoon sunshine or snuggle up on your own sofa. No one will disturb you, not even Granny. As she is already settling in to her first floor master suite and decanting her suitcases into the magnificent French furniture.
Chalet Coco’s versatility continues in the three other beautiful bedrooms, perfectly suited to being configured as either twin or superking rooms. Maybe the promise of not having to share with her brother is what made persuading your daughter to join you this week such a breeze. With peace and quiet such a rarity in the Golding household, it would be rude to not sink into one of the vast sofas in the vaulted living area. With your favourite vintage from the wine cellar propped up on the side, you wish this could be your every Sunday afternoon. From the sitting room flows the dining area, where that piste map will be spread tomorrow morning and a supper that you didn’t have to think about will be appreciated and savoured. With a five course dinner on six evenings, these are your favourite days for a reason. Oh and not forgetting those ultimate hours, sinking into your outdoor hot tub underneath an Alpine canopy of stars.
Located only two chauffeur driven minutes from the slopes, tomorrow can be worried about tomorrow. For now, your only focus needs to be on letting go and drinking in those views and that glass of red.
